Quick guide to a faster wordpress site

Before you go into a lot of effort to make your wordpress website faster, do a speed test with the following website: Test My Site With Google Google recommends that your website loads in 2 seconds or less. Anything longer and you start loosing visitors. Our vanilla wordpress websites with a responsive theme and no optimizationon a VPS host was loading in about 7 seconds. After spending countless hours trying to get our websites fast and wasting many hours on the wrong strategies and plugins and plugin settings, we have created this short list of things to do:
  1. Make sure your webhosting is using the lastest version on php. The difference in speed between php version 5.x and 7.x is almost double in most cases.
  2. Install W3 Total Cache and enable Page Cache and choose disk Enhanced
  3. Install W3 Total Cache and enable Page Cache and choose disk Enhanced
  4. Install Above The Fold Optimization
    • Under the CSS Tab
    • Enable Optime CSS Delivery and choose position Footer
    • Enable Optime Web Fonts and choose Async from Google CDN and Footer
    • Under the Javascript Tab
    • Enable Optime Javascript Loading and leave the rest as defaults
